Does CHI Exist?
by Master Art Mason on Sep.04, 2009, under Kyusho Jitsu, Martial Arts Thoughts
This might qualify as being more of a rant on my part, but here goes. I happened to watch the National Geographic video again in which they are trying to debunk the pressure point art of Kyusho Jitsu. They have some scientist and medical people who will say the Chi does not exist. The body has no meridians, because when you do an autopsy they are not there. From the same group of people who have never cured the common cold. Congratulations.
Chinese medicine dates back 1000′ s of years. Today people all over the world flock to this form of medicine, especially when western medicine has failed them. Large percentage of these people are cured of their illness, some including cancer and aids. Yet western scientist and doctor laugh and balk.
Now, lets take a look at the marvel called the human brain. For as much as science knows about the human brain, they really know nothing. It is one of the greatest mysteries of existence. I believe it will remain a mystery for a long time.
Which brings me to my point. In all the research, surgeries and explorations of the hunam brain, no doctor or scientist has ever seen a thought! I guess then, by their own standards, thought does not exist.
An interesting video
by Master Art Mason on Aug.30, 2009, under Martial Arts Thoughts
I had a very interesting video sent to me today. It is an edit from a longer film and is called The Power of the Way. It is a great demonstration of breaking techniques, using sound principles versus power. I believe that the sender wanted to send me a message about Kyusho and the potential power that it can wield. While I very much enjoyed the video and will watch his others, I do not share the same belief system as the practioner.
He does comment on our “preoccupation with rank.” The belt system was created as a reward system for the Amercia’s. It did not exist in the martial arts of old. However it’s benefit is that it brings people to the martial arts, and shows them, through proper instruction, what the arts are truly about. If some people think it is worthless, more power to them. But they cannot judge what works for others.
Here is the video, I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. My thanks to the sender.
Martial Arts & Sport
by Master Art Mason on Aug.28, 2009, under Martial Arts Thoughts
There is a lot of confusion for people with the current popularity of MMA / UFC style fighting and martial arts. Some of the participants in sport fighting are martial artists. People like Kathy Long are a great example of this. Many of the fighters are not martial artist but joined the sport for the thrill of the fight. Good enough.
The difference between these sports and true martial arts training is the self defense aspect. Martial Artists train their mind and body for the unlikely possibility that someday someone may ATTACK them and try to take their life. There is no short term victory in a real life altercation.
The difference between someone who want to defeat you in a ring or octagon and someone who wants to take your life is a thousand fold. I have spoken with several young fighters about this recently and they have all told me that they don’t mind getting hit, in fact they enjoy it. I asked if they thought they would feel that way when they are 35 or 40, they all said NO. One young man told me that when his fighting days were over, he wanted to become a martial arts master. Good for him!
There are many, many people out there who ridicule martial arts training, but only because they lack the understanding of the purpose. They only see the work MARTIAL and not the word ART. Comparing martial art and martial sport is like comparing water to land. Many of these men and women will understand as they grow older. Some will not.
To my MARTIAL ARTS friends, continue to be a student, not only of the arts, but of LIFE also.
